Inflation is defined as a sustained increase in the price of goods and services over time, and is typically measured by the consumer price index (CPI). While a small amount of inflation is good for the overall economy, inflation is bad for the consumer because one's purchasing power is deteriorated over time. Inflation is simply an indicator that people have confidence in the economy and are willing to spend their money today rather than tomorrow. As opposed to deflationary periods – where prices are falling and consumers delay making purchases if they can, anticipating lower prices in the future, which of course hurts the economy.
