Momma and Baby Bears Visit Al & Amy

Wow. What a morning this was!
(Be sure to have your speakers on so you can hear the cubs cry, and the Momma chuffing her way up the tree.)

This video was captured in early spring, mid-April 2018, that time of year when our trail cameras start capturing footage of newborn wildlife. On this particular morning, Momma bear and her two cubs came a bit too close to our home. Our dog, Buki alerted us to their presence. We dutifully got out the airhorns, and Buki kept up the barking, while our new puppy learned to follow suit. But rather then sending the bears away, our racket just sent the cubs high up in a nearby tree. Momma tried to flee at first, but she couldn't leave her babes behind, so she ended up climbing the tree to join them.

It was an uncharacteristically glorious day for this time of year. After we stopped trying to scare the bears away, this family just settled in the crook of our oak tree and napped in the warm morning sun. The cubs took turns nursing, and when they finished, Momma bear created a protective barrier on either side of her cubs so they could sleep together in the cradle of her arms.

This was a wondrous thing to witness, but we understand how serious this kind of proximity to bears can be. Just listen to that huffing and chuffing of Momma Bear as she climbs up the tree! You don't want to mess with Momma bear.

Thanks so much for watching!
(We hope you enjoy this as much as we did.)
