On March 18th, 2020, I returned once again to Chicago's South Side to see what I could catch. The original plan was to visit the Chesapeake & Indiana Railroad, but because of the weather, I decided to stay closer to home. Our first stop was in Blue Island, IL at the Prairie Street Station on Metra's Beverly Branch. Upon arrival, NIRC 1, one of the oldest engines still in revenue service in the United States, is seen switching in Burr Oak Yard. NIRC 1 is an SW1 built for the Illinois Central back in 1939! Also seen at Prairie street are 2 Metra trains. The first was an outbound with 410 leading. The second was an inbound with 425 pushing! This was my first time seeing this unit in action! I got a heads up that FXE 4015, a SD70ACe, was going to head south on the UP Villa Grove Sub. After sitting in Yard Center, It departed south. I shot the train at a few spots around the South Holland area. After that, I headed north into South Chicago to see what the Chicago Rail Link was doing. I was happy to see OMLX 4200 on today's train instead of the usual OMLX 9469 I've been seeing lately. After getting a number of shots, I packed up and went home.
