What happens when you challenge a “lazy fisherman” to go topwater? In this video on Bob’s Bassin N Stuff, I put Ray to the test at Lake Norman, North Carolina, and the results were downright hilarious. The challenge was simple: put down the Hula Grub and throw topwater for one hour. If Ray caught two bass, he’d have to fish topwater for another hour. Sounds easy, right? Not so fast…

With the water levels down several feet, the topwater bite was painfully slow. I managed to catch a few dinks, but poor Ray endured a full hour of “topwater torture” without landing a single fish. Once he grabbed his drop shot setup, though, the tables turned—he immediately caught his first bass of the day!

Before long, we both switched to finesse fishing, landing several small bass but no giants this time. Between a few treble hook mishaps, a pair of ruined jeans, and a blooper that’ll haunt me forever, this trip had it all—laughs, lessons, and a reminder that there’s never a bad time to finesse fish (just don’t tell Ray I said that).
