The tribal society of India has always been an integral part of Indian civilization and culture with its spiritual traditions, unique customs, and the high virtues of life. Whenever the country's security was at stake, tribal society stood strong to protect the nation by their valor and sacrifice. When the Britishers started to expand their empire in India, tribal society was among the first to give them a tough time from their humble forest lands.
The tribal society never accepted the slavery of the British and thus strong resistance against the British Rule became a frequent occurrence. Be it the Pahariya movement led by Tilka Manjhi, the rebellion of the Koya tribe, the armed struggle by the Kol tribe, the struggle under the leadership of Bhagwan Birsa Munda, the Santhal rebellion in guidance of Siddhu and Kanhu, the great sacrifice of Mangarh many movements by the Bhils or be it the Naga movement in the commands of Rani Gaidelyu, there has been a rich tradition of sacrifice and rebellions of the tribal society against the British.
Apart from organized movements and rebellions, there is a long list of individual sacrifices as well by the tribal society. in truth, thousands of heroes who sacrificed for the freedorn of the nation couldn't even make it to the pages of history! Even today, many such folk songs and stories are prevalent in the tribal society which underline the struggle of the tribal society with the British Rulers. Countless salutes to the sacrifice made by the tribal society for the freedom of India. Programmes on the theme "Tribal Heroes in India's Freedom Struggle" are being held across the country in more than 100 universities whose purpose is to introduce the tribal youth to the contributions and sacrifices of the tribal community in the freedom struggle.
