Elizabeth Woodville was born in 1437 in Northamptonshire, England, as the eldest of the 12 children of Richard Woodville and Jacquetta of Luxembourg. She was initially married to John Grey, who died in 1460, with whom she had two sons. After being widowed, she secretly married Edward IV, with whom she had 10 children, including Edward V and Richard, Duke of York, both of whom disappeared in the Tower of London.

Upon Edward IV's death in 1483, her son Edward V was declared king, but her brother-in-law, Richard of Gloucester, seized power and declared Isabel's marriage null, claiming that Edward IV was already betrothed. As a result, her children were considered illegitimate, allowing Richard to assume the throne as Richard III.
