August Eberhard Müller received his early musical training from his farther, who was an organist. The boy must have been talented, for he played in public for the first time at age 8. While still young, he was sent to Bückeburg in order to study with Johann Christoph Friedrich Bach, one of the four composer-sons of Johann Sebastian Bach. By 1789, we find him in Magdeburg, where he was teaching, and also working as a conductor and organist. Then, in 1804, he was appointed “Thomaskantor” in Leipzig: the same position as that held by J.S. Bach over a half-century earlier. Plainly, Müller, despite his “common” surname, was a stellar musician! In 1810, he accepted an invitation from the Archduke of Weimar to become the Kapellmeister at his court. Müller was said to be a fantastic conductor, who had an extraordinary hear for the finest nuances in music. As shown by his keyboard sonatas Opus 7, published in the 1790s and designated for harpsichord or piano, he was obviously a virtuoso on those instruments, for they are all but easy to play. The second movement of this work is an andante, which the listener will most likely recognize: it is the Mozart aria “La ci darem la mano”, from Don Giovanni. The variations which follow are masterfully composed, and are a delight to hear. Müller not only dedicated himself to his own music, but did much to preserve the musical legacy of J.S. Bach, as well as that of the composers of the Viennese Classical period. As a matter of fact, he was the first musician outside of Vienna to conduct Haydn’s Oratorio “the Seasons”.
