How to propagate lemon tree from cuttings

Here is a complete step-by-step guide to this easy method.

What You Will Need for Success
A healthy parent lemon tree to take cuttings from.

A sharp, clean knife or secateurs (gardening scissors).

A pot (5-6 inches) with good drainage holes.

A Potting Medium: A light, well-draining mix is crucial to prevent rot. A simple and effective mix is 50% garden soil (মাটি) and 50% compost (সার) or sand (বালি). (As we've discussed before, soilless mediums like pure cocopeat also work wonderfully for this stage).

Rooting Hormone Powder: This is not essential, but it is highly recommended as it will make your cuttings root much faster and more reliably.

A Large, Clear Plastic Bag: This is the secret weapon for success.

The Step-by-Step Process
Step 1: Select the Right Cutting

Choose a healthy, straight stem from the current season's growth. You want a "semi-hardwood" cutting. This means the stem should be firm and beginning to turn from green to light brown, not old and woody.

The ideal cutting is 6-8 inches long and about the thickness of a pencil.

Step 2: Prepare the Cutting

Using your sharp knife, make a clean, 45-degree angled cut at the bottom of the stem, right below a leaf node (the small bump where a leaf grows from).

Carefully remove all the leaves from the bottom half of the cutting, leaving only 3-4 leaves at the very top.

To reduce water loss while the cutting has no roots, use your scissors to cut these remaining top leaves in half.

Step 3: Apply Rooting Hormone

This step gives your cutting a powerful boost.

Dip the bottom 1-2 inches of the cutting into the rooting hormone powder, making sure the cut end is well-coated.

Step 4: Plant the Cutting

Fill your pot with the prepared moist potting mix.

Use a stick or your finger to poke a hole in the center of the mix. This is important to avoid scraping off the rooting hormone.

Insert the cutting into the hole, about 2-3 inches deep.

Gently firm the mix around the cutting to hold it securely in place.

Step 5: Create the 'Mini-Greenhouse' (The Most Important Step)

Water the pot gently until a little water runs out of the bottom.

Take your clear plastic bag and place it over the entire pot, covering the cutting. You can use a few small sticks to keep the plastic from touching the leaves.

Seal the bag around the pot with a string or by tucking it underneath. This is the most important step, as it traps humidity and prevents the cutting from drying out before it can grow its own roots.

What to Expect and Next Steps
Location: Place the pot in a warm, bright location that receives no direct sunlight. A shaded porch or near a bright window is perfect.

Root Growth: Lemon cuttings root quite reliably. In the current weather, it will likely take 4 to 8 weeks for a strong root system to develop.

Signs of Success: The best and most reliable sign that your cutting has rooted is when you see new leaves starting to sprout.

After Rooting: Once you see strong new growth, your plant is ready to be acclimated to the normal air. Start by opening the plastic bag for an hour a day, then a few hours, increasing the time over a week before finally removing the bag completely.
