A redevelopment proposal in east Boca Raton is igniting opposition from residents who say the city’s plan threatens cherished public spaces and community landmarks.

The Government Campus Redevelopment project would lease more than 30 acres of city-owned land for 99 years, transforming the area near NW 2nd Avenue and Palmetto Park Road into nearly 1,000 residences, a hotel, shops, restaurants, and a new city hall. At a Tuesday city council meeting, hundreds of residents—many wearing matching “Save Boca” shirts—packed the room to voice their concerns.

“This is a loss of open space, an increase in density, and a major change to the face of Boca Raton,” one speaker said. “It should be decided by a referendum—not by five people who live west of I-95.”
