In 1988 I was making documentaries for Turner Broadcasting Company. Ted Turner had conceived a series called Portraits of America where documentary filmmakers like me got the chance to record hour-long prime time television stories about each state. My team and I were assigned South Carolina and decided that one of the episodes should tell the story of Hilton Head, South Carolina and captures the feelings of its founder, Charles Frazier.

Hilton Head Island is famous for its incredible Atlantic Ocean beaches and world-class golf courses. It's regularly voted one of the best vacation destinations in the world. Between the island and mainland the Pinckney Island National Wildlife Refuge salt marsh hosts deer, alligators and an incredible variety of birds.

This video includes an interview with Charles Frazier. In 1956, Fraser, son of one of the families that owned most of the Island, realized that Hilton Head Island had more to offer than just timber. Armed with vision, energy, modern air conditioning and investment dollars, he created a master plan for a resort community.

Today Hilton Head remains extraordinarily popular with a robust real estate market that has a high demand for properties, particularly during peak vacation seasons. The island also has a strong economy and low unemployment rate which provides stability to the local real estate market.

So many companies currently provide services including Wheelz Hilton Head, Hilton Head realtors, Disney Vacation Club Hilton Head, vacation rental organizations like Shorewood Villas and Villamare as well as a unique & fascinating Coastal Discovery Museum.

Hilton Head's housing expenses are 15% higher than the national average and the utility prices are 6% higher than the national average. Transportation expenses like bus fares and gas prices are 10% lower than the national average. However Hilton Head Island contains both very wealthy and poor people as residents.

No question Hilton Head is one of the best places to retire with gated communities, beachfront villas and luxury homes to choose from. But it's far more than a retirement community beneath a beautifully-preserved tree canopy. It's also a world-class golf destination, a biker's paradise, and a beach comber's dream.

If I didn't live in beautiful California, I wouldn't mind at all going back to Hilton Head and experiencing again the wonderful time I had there back in the late 1980s.
