Children's Capital of Culture journey to 2025 has officially started! In February, we've celebrated it with an action-packed programme, full of skateboarding, art installations, floor murals, art workshops, music and street food.

In February half-term 2022, Rotherham Town Centre has transformed into ‘Uplift’, a very first, colourful pop-up skate park, created by Art of Protest Projects. In three days, more than 380 young people have joined the Olympic BMX bikers and skateboarders in free skate workshops. Many more came and watched the GB athletes - Alex Hallford, Jordan Thackery and Jack Maguire - performing their best kickflips, ollies and laser flips.

Robot Selfie, a wall-painting robot by UK-based production studio Kaleider, created a spectacular 10 x 8 metre mural of Young People’s faces. More than 1450 visitors came to Outdoor Covered Market to watch Robot spray painting for the first time in colour! We had 126 selfies submitted to the online portal and will be creating an exhibition of all of the portraits to tour across Rotherham.

We've invited young people and their families to try three different art workshops: stencil and spray-painting, screen-printing with Carousel Print Studio and sticker making with an illustrator Ed Syder. Anyone from beginner artists to advanced muralists had a chance to learn the fundamentals of design elements, stencil making, spray painting techniques, can control and drop shadowing.

Over three days local DJs and live bands, including Skint Knees and Undies played their best hits.

Grimm and Co transformed The Old Town Hall site into Linger Longer Lane, turning it into a hub of music, drama, dance and visual arts. Find out more HERE.

The Children’s Capital of Culture project is led by Rotherham Council, delivered in partnership with children and young people, businesses, voluntary and community sector organisations and cultural institutions from across the borough. The programme has received significant external funding from the UK Community Renewal Fund, Arts Council England, South Yorkshire Mayoral Combined Authority, and ERDF.
