Invented by Shigeo Shingo 60 years ago, SMED is largely applied within Toyota as a principle to accelerate changeovers. It is rarely included in continuous improvement programmes of companies today whereas the methodology can yield in considerable gains for all types of industry. It is NOT exclusive to the automotive industry.

In this video, Philip Marris comments on SMED in general, its relevancy outside the car industry and how it enables a better process mastery for complex facilities.

He presents an example in the aeronautical industry where the changeover time amounts to 30% of the total production time, leading to a substantial improvement potential thanks to SMED. Although sometimes more difficult to implement, he explains that SMED is absolutely feasible in other circumstances than car makers and should be considered as an opportunity for leaders to refine their knowledge in regards to processes, standards, machines etc.
