Antique Firefighter Helmet Restoration

Описание к видео Antique Firefighter Helmet Restoration

We would like to thank you in advance for 22:19 minutes of your time.
In today's episode we will show the renovation of an old historical fire helmet from the First Republic. Apparently commander :)
The helmet is made of leather with metal peak and brass trim. Other decoration is made of brass.
This helmet was sent to me for renovation.

Some of the history:
Some foundation of the fire brigade can be found already in ancient Rome. The local fire brigade consisted of about 500 slaves. Then the fire expertise was forgotten and in the case of fires all the inhabitants of the towns participated in extinguishing. However, new fire-fighting measures were also developed, one of the most important being the separation of the kitchen from the main part of the building. It was only at the beginning of the 19th century that fire brigades began to form again, but on a voluntary basis (source Wikipedia)

Action Index:

0:07 fire helmet performance before renovation
0:31 disassembly of brass parts using pliers
3:50 using a scalpel to cut off the metal collar and the original ruined leather lining
4:46 a little music won't hurt :)
5:23 disassembled parts helmet
5:46 And the cleaning itself begins. Using a spatula and a hot-air pislote, I try to remove the old paint from the leather body.
6:24 Removing the paint didn't go very well, so I took a rasp to help.
6:40 Then I cleaned the body with sandpaper P180
6:43 ... followed by a base coat of about 3 layers because the skin had soaked a lot
7:00 after the base paint dries, I cleaned the hairs with the P220 sanding sponge and sprayed the last layer of the base with the body
7:16 while the base paint dries, clean the metal collar in the container with caustic water. Attention necessary protective equipment !!!
7:40 after about one hour of leaching, rinsing with clean water followed by brush removal
8:20 I originally did not want to remove the brass rim, but changed my mind
8:56 tin was needed to connect the metal rim, I used hydrochloric acid for cleaning and silver solder paste
10:15 the left hem was still sprayed with basic paint
10:28 I applied a spray putty to the dry and ground helmet body for easier grinding
11:02 The inner rim of the helmet was half black and half green in its original appearance. This dyeing had to be done first before sewing (then I could spray the leather insert)
11:55 The original leather insert was not complete, so I used a spare. To soften the old skin, apply oil that is used for riding saddles.
12:22 And then the stitching of the helmet together. I let my wife do this job :) She did it very nice by the way, thanks Veronika :)
13:24 We can paint this stitched helmet in black. For higher abrasion resistance I used two-component epoxy paint.
14:21 While the black paint dries, we clean the brass parts with a brass cleaner, it's an original blend of several acids to make cleaning less accessible places easier.
16:05 Only a few seconds are enough to make it clean. the acid reacts quite quickly and it is necessary to rinse the brass parts thoroughly in water to stop the chemical reaction.
16:28 ... followed by polishing with abrasive paste and felt disc.
Clean the residue with acetone.
17:58 Upcoming parts :)
18:02 And let's compile :)
20:25 Done. And test it! That we have beautiful firefighters?
