When boredom and a few too many beers strike, remarkable ideas can be born. This was precisely the case for Swedish enthusiasts Henrik Söderlund and Morgan Gerdin, who decided to embark on an audacious project: fitting a 400hp, two-stroke V8 engine into a Volvo Amazon, resulting in a mind-boggling creation that turned heads and surely annoyed neighbors. Let's delve into the story behind this wild venture and explore the unconventional marriage of a 1980s Evinrude 300XP marine V8 and the iconic Volvo 120.
.Inspiration struck the creators when they were under the influence of alcohol. Henrik recalls the moment, saying, "It came to us when we were drunk. I had the motor in my boat. It was in the garage for some service and tuning. I happened to park the boat with the engine hanging next to the Amazon, and a few beers later the picture cleared." Little did they know that this seemingly boozy epiphany would lead to an extraordinary automotive experiment.
The heart of this unique vehicle is a 3.6-liter Evinrude 300XP two-stroke marine V8, which originated from the 1980s era. Henrik and Morgan ingeniously shoehorned this potent engine into the body of the Volvo Amazon, giving birth to a fusion of automotive and marine technologies. The original engine produced 340hp on the crank, but with the addition of customized expansion chambers, extensive porting, and electronic fuel injection (EFI), the power output is expected to increase significantly.
While the precise power band of this unconventional creation remains unknown, the enthusiasts have already revved it up to 5200rpm. However, the tuned expansion chambers are designed for up to 6500rpm, and with a rev limit set at 8500rpm, there is immense untapped power waiting to be unleashed. Henrik confidently states, "With the pipes, extensive porting and EFI, it should make more!" The prospect of further tuning promises even more breathtaking performance from this Swedish masterpiece.
Now they didn’t stop with the engine swop, To accommodate the massive power of the two-stroke V8, the creators made several modifications to the vehicle. They fitted a customized Powerglide transmission and a Volvo/Dana four-link rear end, ensuring optimal power delivery and control. Additionally, a pair of colossal 33×10.5-inch drag slicks provides the necessary grip to harness the car's potential. Remarkably, only 30kg of the original structure of the Volvo Amazon remains intact, resulting in a svelte weight of 683kg. This substantial weight reduction, combined with the awe-inspiring power output, should enable the Swedish creation to tear down the strip with astonishing speed.
