Three years after the mysterious disappearance of his wife Mia, Ethan Winters receives a video of her in distress beckoning him to investigate. After escaping from the psychotic mad man that doesn't seem to die, Ethan tries to find a way out of the house, but the doors are sealed shut and the windows are bared. He finds himself hiding inside of a wall, hoping he won't be discovered. He follows the gap in the wall to a distant part of the house where he continues to search for a way out. However during the process he notices an odd black moldy fungus growing on the walls. He's never seen anything like it before. As he continues further and further into the nearby rooms and corridors he notices that the mold is only getting thicker and thicker. He steps into a room where the fungus is so thick that the walls cannot even be scene.
As he heads for the door on the opposite side of the room, the unbelievable happens. A large black, slimy, humanoid creature bursts out of the mold and tries to attack him. He shoots it in the head and blows off a chunk, but it continues to stumble towards him. He shoots it again, blowing off another chunk and it STILL continues to stumble towards him. He continues to blast it several times more until it finally falls to it's death. But it's not over. Ethan realizes that his only option forward is the ominous staircase ahead, leading down into the darkness of the basement, where the mold is at it's thickest.
