“The Coolin” is a famous and beautiful Irish harp air most likely dating from the seventeenth century. It was collected in 1792 at the Belfast Harp Festival by Edward Bunting from the 97-year-old harper Denis Hempson, a man who had the rare distinction of living in three centuries, and was first published in Bunting’s 3-volume work, “The Ancient Music of Ireland.” This arrangement is based on a recording by Patricia Cahill (b. 1945), a former Irish nun who was advised by her mother superior to leave the cloistered life and give the gift of her extraordinary singing to the world.
The coolin was a medieval Irish young men’s hairstyle which was described by the 1297 Irish parliament as having their “heads half shaved and grow their hair long at the back”. The parliament banned Anglo- Norman men from sporting the hairdo, calling it “degenerate”.
The style was clearly not without its admirers, though-in one version of the lyrics, an Irish maiden enjoins other young women to marry the wearers of the coolin.
