In 1896, a desperate 25-year-old sheepherder named Dave Tucker made a choice that would change his life forever. He joined a gang to rob the First Bank of Joseph in Oregon—but the heist was a disaster. They expected $8,000 but got only $2,000. One accomplice was killed during the escape, and Tucker never saw a dime of the money.
Captured and sentenced to seven years in prison, Tucker had plenty of time to reflect on his mistakes. But this story doesn't end behind bars. After his release, Tucker returned to Joseph, Oregon, and did the unthinkable: he worked hard, earned the community's respect, and eventually bought stock in the very bank he had robbed.
Dave Tucker rose to become Vice President of the First National Bank of Joseph. The young criminal became a pillar of the community—a true redemption story. Tucker remained repentant his entire life, saying he never fully atoned for his crime.
Today, the bank building houses the Wallowa County Museum, preserving this incredible piece of Oregon history.
This is the true story of transformation, second chances, and the power of redemption.
