The Loveland High School Robotics class built a 3-Speed Transmission demonstration out of an NXT kit. The purpose of the build was to show the principles of gear ratios and how a simple transmission and clutch work.

The transmission and program are both relatively simple to understand. When the touch sensor in the gas pedal is pressed, the motor begins to turn. The clutch is activated by pushing on a lever that turn the drive motor thus separating it from the driving gear. The stick is then moved backward or forward to change gears and the clutch is released to reengage the motor. The gears are in three gear ratios:
1) smaller to larger, thus increasing power and reducing speed
2) one to one, thus only transferring the speed and power of the drive motor
3) larger to smaller, thus increasing the speed at which the wheel can turn but reducing drive power
The brake is then engaged by releasing the touch sensor which causes the motor to stop and friction to stop the wheel.
