Dona Bertarelli is a philanthropist, ocean advocate, investor and accomplished sportswoman. She is the executive chair of Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy, co-chair of the Bertarelli Foundation, a World Economic Forum Friend of Ocean Action and previously served as the Special Adviser for the Blue Economy for the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD).
Dona’s journey as a philanthropist began at an early age, at the heart of her family, where she gained a love for all life on Earth, and a fundamental belief that action combined with empathy can drive positive change. Amongst other activities, she is working towards the creation of large-scale highly and fully marine protected areas to help reach 30x30 target through Pew Bertarelli Ocean Legacy where she and partners The Pew Charitable Trusts have helped to obtain designations or commitments to safeguard over 13 million square kilometers of ocean to date.
Dona also supports positive action for biodiversity in the field of sports through Sports for Nature, a joint initiative of the IUCN, International Olympic Committee (IOC), the UN Environment Programme (UNEP), the Convention on Biological Diversity (CBD) and Dona Bertarelli Philanthropy, which has more than 100 signatories and counting. She also supports environmental education for youth through Sow my Dream, a programme accredited by the French educational authorities, and Scienscope at the University of Geneva, to offer scientific workshops on biodiversity for school students.
As an investor, with assets in real estate, hospitality and luxury, she focuses on long-term value creation. She believes strongly in the power of business to do good for society and drove the development of the family pharmaceutical business Serono’s philanthropy and educational programmes, when she served as Executive Director, Public and Professional Affairs from 1992 to 1997.
A keen sportswoman and sailor, Dona Bertarelli co-founded Sails of Change, a professional sailing team, alongside her husband, Yann, who is a renowned French skipper. In the winter of 2015-16, she was helmsman-trimmer aboard the world’s largest racing maxi-trimaran, as the team attempted sailing’s ultimate challenge, the Jules Verne Trophy. Although the team narrowly missed beating the record, Dona became the fastest woman to sail around the world.
