Assessment of future water provisioning and sediment load under climate and LULC change scenarios in a peninsular river basin, India

Climate change and land use–land cover (LULC) transformations are rapidly altering ecosystem services in many Indian river basins. This video examines the Upper Narmada River Basin (UNRB), where agricultural expansion and future climate scenarios are reshaping water provisioning and sediment dynamics.

Using the InVEST ecosystem services modeling framework, the study quantifies how climate change and LULC change—individually and together—affect water yield and sediment export. Results show that climate change strongly increases water yield, while LULC change significantly raises sediment export, with combined effects amplifying both. The spatial patterns across sub-basins provide actionable insights for land management, reservoir operation, and ecosystem restoration, particularly for downstream systems such as the Rani Avanti Bai Sagar Reservoir.
