On 17th June Sex Matters hosted a interactive panel discussion, ‘Sex in the Equality Act: Understanding and implementing the FWS judgment’, at the Faculty of Advocates in Edinburgh.

The discussion was chaired by Joanna Cherry KC, who served as the Member of Parliament for Edinburgh South-West from 2015 to 2024 and is on the board of LGB Alliance, a successful intervenor in the case.

Aidan O’Neill KC – represented For Women Scotland. He is a “double silk”, being King’s Counsel at both the Scottish and English Bars, specialising in human rights and devolution law.

David Welsh – represented Sex Matters (with Ben Cooper KC). He is an advocate in Scotland and barrister in England & Wales specialising in public and commercial law

Dr Michael Foran – lecturer in public law at University of Glasgow and incoming Associate Professor of Law at Oxford. His paper Defining Sex in Law is cited in the judgment.

Susan Smith – co-director of For Women Scotland, the campaign group that brought the case

Jenny Willmott – founder of Scottish Lesbians, a campaign group that intervened in the case.

Maya Forstater – CEO of Sex Matters and claimant in the landmark Forstater EAT case on “gender critical” belief.
