Tainted YSR Congress chief Jaganmohan Reddy, who was not long ago referred to as "god-given brother" by mining baron Gali Janardhana Reddy, has been registered as undertrial number 6093 in the Chanchalguda jail roster.

However, unlike Reddy, who, as inmate number 697 had to undergo tribulations of the spartan life at Chanchalguda before being accorded the special category inmate status, Jagan has been awarded special status by a CBI court right away.

As a special category undertrial, Jagan will be spared of donning the striped clothes of the inmates. He is entitled to special food, news papers and magazines.

"He might be allowed to meet his relative and close aide Sunil Reddy who is also in the under trial barrack in the Emaar property case. This helps a new undertrial to acclimatise to the prison life and lessens the trauma," prison officials said.

Under the CBI scanner in a disproportionate assets case, Jagan had rebuffed speculations on his close ties with the mining baron from Bellary in September 2011, days after Reddy's arrest.

"Why are you asking me about Gali Janardhana Reddy's arrest? It is better to ask BJP. It is not me, but BJP which must respond. It is not a good practice for the media to pose questions on arrest of a different party leader to me," a visibly angry Jagan had said then.

The two politicos were more than cordial when Janardhan Reddy-promoted Brahmani steels was setting up an unit in Kadapa district. Janardhana Reddy was allocated 10,760 acres of land for the project at a throwaway price of Rs 18,500 per acre by the erstwhile state government headed by Y S Rajasekhara Reddy, which he subsequently mortgaged to the banks and raised Rs 350 crore at Rs 3.25 lakh per acre.
