Tongnan District is part of Chongqing Municipality, located in the northwest of Chongqing, in the linear economic corridor of Yulong region; it is a new industrial base of Chengdu and Chongqing, an ecological and cultural tourism destination of western Chongqing, and a green vegetable capital of western China. It is adjacent to Hechuan District and Tongliang District in the east, Dazu District in the south, Anyue County in Ziyang City, Sichuan Province, Anju District in Suining City, Sichuan Province, and Funsan District in Suining City, Sichuan Province, and Pengxi County in Suining City, Sichuan Province, and Wusheng County in Guang'an City, Sichuan Province, in the north, and Jialing District in Nanchong City, Sichuan Province.
Tongnan District covers an area of 1,583 square kilometers and has 3 streets and 20 towns; according to the seventh census, as of November 1, 2020, Tongnan District had a resident population of 688,115. In 2020, Tongnan District will achieve a regional GDP of 47.526 billion yuan, an increase of 4.3% over the previous year. Tongnan is a shallow hilly landscape in the basin with flat terrain and an altitude of 300-450 meters; it has a subtropical humid monsoon climate with a mild climate, abundant heat, rainfall, sunshine and four seasons for farming.
Tongnan District has a long history, with the establishment of a county in 373 A.D. (the first year of Ningkang in the Eastern Jin Dynasty) and Dong'an County in 1912, which was renamed Tongnan in 1914 because of its location south of Tongchuan Prefecture. It has given birth to such great men of the times as Yang Gangong, Yang Shangkun and Yang Baibing, and nurtured such historical and cultural celebrities as Chen Tuan, the supreme Taoist, Lv Daqi, an important minister of the Ming Dynasty, and Liao Jingqiu, a master of Sichuan opera; Taian Fish, Lion Dance and Che Che Lantern are included in the municipal intangible cultural heritage, and it is the hometown of Chinese folk culture and art.
Tongnan District has humanistic attractions such as the Dafoji Scenic Area, Shuangjiang Ancient Town, and the scenic spot of Chen Tuan's hometown in Chongjian. It has 4 national key cultural relics protection units, 10 municipal-level cultural relics protection units, and 61 county-level cultural relics protection units. It is an important transportation hub in the Sichuan-Chongqing region, with the Yusui Railway, Yusui Expressway, Tongrong Expressway and the under-construction Beibei (Beibei) Anyue Expressway, and National Highway 246, National Highway 319 and National Highway 351 lines passing through the territory. In June 2017, Tongnan District was named a national health city.
