App Tracking Transparency is an Apple framework, a fragment of code that shows users a permission prompt on an iPhone or iPad. App developers must use it if they collect data about users and want to share it with other companies for the purpose of tracking people across apps and websites.

The ATT has three components:

1) Default text: Apple asks: do you want to allow this app to track your activity?
2) Custom message: here the app can explain why they want your data
3) Decision component: you decide to Ask the app not to track … or allow it

The idea is that people get a better sense of what data apps can collect and how they use it, and the right to opt in or opt out.

There’s also a global setting for ATT in your phone’s settings. Turn this off, and you’ll never see the App Tracking Transparency prompt, and no app will get your IDFA, or identifier for advertisers. Some phones are restricted from tracking automatically, including those with child accounts or corporate set-ups.

Turning ATT off doesn’t mean that no data of yours will be collected or tracked, but it does mean ad targeting or measurement must happen on-device, and can’t leave your phone in any way that identifies you.
