DREAMS BEING LOCKED OUT OF CLASS 😭

"We need a nil balance… Just go back..."

Those were the painful words Mitchelle heard today when she went back to school, armed with ksh. 5,000 which she got from a church contribution 💔. While all the other students remained in school, she was the only one on the road.😟

Walking home from Okoth Ojolla High School, Mitchelle and her elder brother, Wesley, were tired and broken. I approached them, and Wesley opened up about the struggles they face. What he shared was both heartbreaking and humbling.

Wesley and his siblings are being raised by a single parent, himself. 😢

Their mother, who was their only source of support, passed away in May 2024.💔 Since then, Wesley has been a brother, father, and mother to his younger siblings, including a 2-year-old baby sister.

Their mother used to do casual work with the county government of Kisumu. After her passing, many relatives and colleagues promised to help with the children’s education. Sadly, those promises faded, leaving Wesley and his siblings to fight alone.

The small savings their mother left helped settle part of the first term’s fees.

Wesley himself is in Year 2 at Zetech University, where he studies under a volleyball sponsorship that covers 90% of his tuition. He struggles to raise the remaining 10% (around Ksh. 7,000–9,000) plus hostel arrears (Ksh. 21,000 in total).

Mitchelle, in Form Four at Okoth Ojolla Girls, has been sent home because of fee arrears totaling Ksh. 22,475 (including development fees). Without this, she cannot sit in class in preparation of her final exams.

When asked about their father, Wesley painfully admitted that though he is alive, he lives elsewhere with their stepmother...

At just his age, Wesley carries the weight of six siblings on his shoulders. One of his sisters, who finished high school in 2024, stays home to care for their 2-year-old sister because she couldn’t proceed to college due to lack of support.

Wesley hustles by training high school volleyball teams to earn a little, and whatever he gets, he shares with his siblings. Sometimes, he survives on as little as Ksh. 500 from match allowances.

Despite the hardships, their determination to pursue education and rise above poverty is unshaken.

These are not just statistics, they are real lives, real tears, and real dreams on the line.

Mitchelle deserves to complete her education and sit for her Form Four exams.

Wesley deserves to continue university so he can lift his family out of despair.

Their younger siblings deserve a chance to dream again.
