Cycle ride Sunderland to South Hetton and return via Seaham Harbour. The Cycle route video starts on approach to Queen Alexandra Bridge in Southwick Sunderland, up to Millfield and on to Barnes Park roundabout before cycling up the line of the old South Hetton Railway to Gilley Law Lakes. This is a Cycle ride Ive done a few times previously but the first time Ive recorded the full Cycle ride. It was such a calm day, the lake was flat and mirror-like, reflecting the high rise flats at Gilley Law so I just had to divert slightly from the Cycle path and stop to take a shot. From Gilley Law Lakes I crossed the road to get back on to the Cycle path between Farringdon Estate and Gilley Law which after crossing the East Herrington to Silksworth Road took me to The Oaktree at Doxford International Business Park. Passing through the estate to the top, I turned left to follow the W2W cycle route through the wooded area. To get on to the new cycle route which follows the line of the A19 highway requires a bit of mountain biking or pushing up the steep rough incline but I find it easier to pedal up to the top onto the new cycle path. The seat provided on the new cycling route here provides a great view overlooking the Sunderland skyline but my camera work doesn't show this as good as experiencing the view live.
It will be lost forever shortly as new houses will soon obscure the view. Onwards along the cycle path again to Burdon Road where we cross and follow the Cycle route across the A19 highway up to Warden Law where I paused to view the action at Karting North East. Crossing the Houghton to Seaham Road to Sharpley I came across a new enterprise I hadn't seen previously hiring out static Glamping Pods. Down through the road between the fields of wind turbines brought me to a new cycle route, Route 1 which stretches the length of the East Coast which I followed for a few miles past Murton to South Hetton where I took the shots on the site of the old South Hetton Colliery.
After following the highway towards Haswell for a short distance I turned left too soon and had to ride over the remains of the old spoil heap.
This eventually took me to the new trading estate and the Road to Nowhere which I followed to the roundabout over the A19 highway near Dalton Park retail outlets. It was a great downhill cycle ride from here following the shared cycle route to the coast at Seaham Harbour where there were a couple of ships either loading or off-loading, then onwards to the Tommy statue where I stopped to pay my respects. Then onward towards Seaton, passing Seaton Hall Hotel to the railway crossing where as you see, the barrier came down as I was approaching. Once cleared, I cycled through Seaton Village towards Houghton le Spring stopping off at Sharpley Golf Club for a bacon butty and cup of tea.
Through Old Burdon Village to cross over the A19 highway for the final time to rejoin the cycle track down to Doxford International Business Park and retrace my tracks to Sunderland North.
