Instead of the Italian "Notturno" the French word Nocturne is also often used, suggesting the nightly atmosphere of the piece. While other popular composers like Chopin wrote many Notturnos for the piano, Grieg only wrote one Notturno.

The difficulty level of this piece is not easy to assess, and depends a lot on the experience you have. Being in C major, it can look very easy at first sight, but there is more to it than you would initially think. In fact, opinions on the difficulty vary from grade 5 all the way up to grade 9 difficulty. This is because the notes themselves are relatively easy, but there are a few difficult parts to master for the beginner piano grades.
