Join me as I take a walk through the Southern Mastaba Field at Giza, just south of the Sphinx Causeway, and southwest of the Sphinx itself! Here we can find literally hundreds of downward shafts and doors, all sealed by either sand, masonry, or metal doors and gates. While some of the underground entrances may lead to tombs or ceremonial spaces, it is likely that a large number of them are air and light shafts, connected to the underground passageways below.

This area of the Plateau is rarely explored, though it provides a great example of how many entrances really exist there. The area is centered around the Tomb of KhentKawes/Khentkaus, which is just south of a structure called the 'Second Sphinx'. The suggestion that this is a west-facing, weathered Sphinx was originally proposed by Dr. Reda Abdel Hakim. You can see Dr. Reda's report here:
