There is a difference between researching to find the best method to do something, and research to publish. The former it is relatively simple and require unbiased reflection on what you are doing in order to improve. Basically it is trail and error. The later is largely out of our reach at the moment, although if any orthodontics wishes to compare their facial outcomes with us we feel that it would be blatantly clear.

Running a clinic where you are trying to change and adapt, learning from what you are doing, is never going to be profitable. I cannot work more hours, I am constantly pushing the limits of burn out, have sold my house and taken early inheritance. The show must go on, the people need this and very badly.

For the latter half of his career Prof Mew effectively ran a charity for the benefit of his patients.
However this is not the view of the orthodontic community. I remember being at the BOS conference when Jay Bowman (an orthodontist from Mitchegan) giving the keynote lecture put up a photograph of my family home and made quite an effective effort of discrediting my father in front of a jeering audience. My father sat at the very front, in the empty area, directly in front of Jay. Afterwards he went up to Jay shock his hand and said that he would love to talk openly about orthodontics and these issues.

It seems the inference from Jay was that my father was a charlatan who had fleeced lots of gullible patients out of money providing a uselss treatment. Prof Mew was never able to defend his point of view, he was never given the opportunity.

One day I would love to invite Jay to a full, fair and free debate on any subject within orthodontics. My father remains a gentleman on a level that few can comprehend.
