Rainy Trail Run - Cruel Jewel 50 miles Ultra Marathon (2023)

Cruel Jewel 50 miles Ultra Marathon documentary - my last race before the big one! I was signed up for Cruel Jewel 100 miles ultra marathon, but decided to dial it down to give more time to heal.

But Ultra Trail Running is never easy, and you can never take a race for granted! Even if I was "just running 50 miles", I knew it would be a challenge! This race covers multiple mountains in the Georgian mountains. East Coast / Beast Coast trail hit different, with steep elevation gain / drop. Over 58 miles (yes, the race is officially closer to 100k than actually 50 miles, even according to the race director), you climb 17k feet of gain!

That's massive - to put things in perspective, that's about as much as you climb during Leadville 100 miles. So needless to say, it was a good workout!

But to top it off, the climate there is harsh. Humid heat - the kind that you get soaking wet and just can't cool off. Unless of course, it starts pouring! Which, well, spoiler alert, it did. For hours - it was torrential. The trail turned to small rivers, and eventually just plain old mud. It became fairly treacherous and I was glad to have my pole!

I'm sure I could have done the 100 miles, but I think I made the right decision. I'll certainly want to come back, maybe next year, to do the 100 miles, being one of the hardest out there. Moreover, you get a belt for the 50, and the buckle for the 100! Alright, I HAVE to come back...
