Iran’s transformation into an Islamic theocracy did not happen overnight, and it did not emerge from a cultural vacuum. It was the endpoint of a much longer political story shaped by foreign intervention, failed reform, and the slow destruction of democratic possibility.

This video traces that story from Iran’s early constitutional movement, through the rise of Mohammad Mossadegh and the nationalisation of Iranian oil, to the 1953 CIA and MI6-backed coup that removed a democratically elected government. It follows how that intervention reshaped Iran’s political trajectory, empowered an authoritarian monarchy, and hollowed out every peaceful path for reform.

From there, it examines the Shah’s modernisation project, its real achievements, and the deep resentment it produced as political life was crushed and dissent driven underground. With secular opposition eliminated, religious networks became the only surviving space for mobilisation. That vacuum did not remain empty.

The result was the 1979 revolution, the rise of Ayatollah Khomeini, and the creation of an Islamic Republic that proved even more repressive than the regime it replaced. The video ends by looking at the long shadow of these choices, the persistence of protest in Iran today, and the uncomfortable reality that foreign intervention helped create the conditions for the very system now condemned.
