The UNESCO Office in Amman is launching a Design for Handmade Objects Contest, open to all Jordanian designers. The aim of the contest is to encourage Jordanian designers and craftsperson to keep up traditional crafts while adapting them to a changing environment and market.

The designs should be inspired by Jordan's diverse popular culture and living heritage, and be based mostly on locally available, natural and/or recycled materials. A jury of artists, designers and handicraft producers will choose the winning designs which will be announced at a public event in 2012. The deadline for submission is 10th February 2012, and applications can be made online on www.alhoush.com.

UNESCO recognizes that there are excellent designers in Jordan, and also that there are many handicraft producers in the country. Crafts are one of the most visible part of cultural diversity and heritage. The added value of craft products stems from the fact that they mirror the creativity, culture and heritage of craftsperson. It is UNESCO's intention to encourage innovation and promote the presence of creative craftsperson in the national and global market and develop links between crafts and design.
