Vanderbilt University Medical Center has made the decision to halt gender-affirming plastic surgeries for adults, an email sent to FOX17 News confirms.

VUMC, which is in the process of contacting impacted patients regarding the new policy changes, released a statement on Saturday:

Due to operational limitations and lack of surgical coverage, Vanderbilt Health will cease providing gender-affirming plastic surgeries for adults. Vanderbilt Health continues to provide nonsurgical gender-affirming care for adults 19 years and older.

Vanderbilt Health said it does not provide any gender-affirming care for patients younger than 19. On June 18, 2025, The Supreme Court upheld Tennessee's 2023 ban on sex change operations for minors.

Local advocates described the move by the hospital as a setback for the LGBTQ+ community. The decision follows criticism from the Metro Nashville LGBTQ Caucus, which issued a public letter to VUMC last summer, criticizing the hospital for ending transgender care for children before the state law, releasing patient records to the state attorney general and withdrawing from Nashville’s Pride festival. The caucus issued a formal vote of no confidence in VUMC leadership, accusing the hospital of abandoning its commitments to the LGBTQ+ community.

“It was kind of a gut punch,” said Metro Council Member At-Large Olivia Hill in a previous interview with FOX17, in July. “I really stood up and spoke very loudly about VUMC and how awesome and supportive they were, and how much they had inclusion for everyone, and to have them walk away like that felt like a betrayal from an old friend.”

Meanwhile, a bill targeting gender-affirming procedures is making its way through the state Legislature. The proposal would ban TennCare insurance from covering gender-affirming surgeries for adults.

Attorney Lovin Crutchfield with the Tennessee Office of Legal Services clarified during a hearing this week, "This (proposed law) is saying that TennCare can’t cover or reimburse for these procedures for anyone."
