GERD, Heartburn, or Acid reflux: How often can I take antacids?
A common question I get about antacids is: "How often can I take antacids?" This is a important question to ask because antacids are made of salts, like Calcium salts (Ca), or Magnesium salts (Mg), and Aluminum salts (Al).

Tums and PEPCID are primarily made of Calcium salts. After ingestion, the antacids will start an acid- base chemical reaction, lowering the acidity (or Ph) of your stomach acid. This will relieve any Acid reflux symptoms, but will have two side effects. First, the nutrient absorption will decrease. This is a result of weak stomach acid, which is needed for proper digestion. Second, any extra Ca will be absorbed into the blood stream causing a disbalance between Calcium and Magnesium. Disbalance of Calcium in the blood will have to be brought to equilibrium. The kidneys will filter out the extra Calcium from the blood. Excess Calcium in the kidneys may contribute to kidney stone formation.
