In our contemporary world, Sicily is now recognized as a primary land of Italian winemaking, and its varietals are regularly featured in global wine reviews. What you find in a glass of Sicilian wine or spirit however is not just a distinctive or exclusive set of flavors (which certainly derive from the island’s rich and complex soil), but also, as I outlined today, a layered and polyvalent story: of foreign influence (Marsala), religious heritage (Averna), rediscovered past (Nero d’Avola), aesthetic reinvention (Donnafugata), and environmental sustainability (Amara). What a Sicilian glass reflects is ultimately the Mediterranean soul of the island, as a sophisticated and stratified crossroads of arts, trade, and legacy.
