Creating Lifelike 3D animal models with scanning and software approaches: Implications for conservation, natural history collections and locomotor studies

Recent innovations in 3D scanning technology and software now allow scientists to recreate living animals accurately in 3D. This allows new opportunities for fields as diverse as animal locomotion, biodiversity, natural history collections, robotics, and animal conservation studies, among others. Further, there are exciting new innovations in using drone technology to scan megafauna as diverse as sharks, whales, and elephants, in combination with machine learning software to understand variation in body condition across temporal and spatial scales. The role of these new software and hardware innovations is discussed in the context of new web systems that allow scientists to share these 3D models and access them on various kinds of VR and AR platforms.
