For decades, academic and industry researchers have been building control algorithms for autonomous helicopters. These robotic systems can fly without human guidance, and competitions such as those held by the Association for Unmanned Vehicle Systems International (AUVSI) have pushed the boundaries — even requiring indoor navigation without GPS.

MIT’s Robust Robotics Group took on an even greater challenge: designing algorithms that allow fixed-wing airplanes to fly indoors without GPS. At the 2011 International Conference on Robotics and Automation (ICRA), the group introduced a trajectory-calculation algorithm. The following year, they unveiled a state-estimation system capable of determining the aircraft’s location, orientation, velocity, and acceleration using only onboard sensors.

In recent flight tests, an autonomous robotic plane equipped with this technology successfully navigated through pillars in the underground parking garage of MIT’s Stata Center. Without any GPS assistance, the plane relied entirely on its algorithms and sensors to avoid obstacles and maintain flight stability.

This innovation opens the door to a new generation of robotic aircraft capable of operating in GPS-denied environments such as disaster zones, dense cities, and indoor facilities.
