School Resource officers or SROs do more than provide safety for the students and staff on campus.

CBS 21’s Alex Thill got the chance to see that firsthand while shadowing Lancaster Police officers Shannon Mazzante and Josiah King.

Ofc. Mazzante’s day starts ahead of the first bell, and 9 o’clock means she just finished her morning of checking emails and meeting with a few kids in her office at Reynolds Middle School.

“We have some students that are allowed to take breaks. They have some behavioral concerns so sometimes if they get frustrated in class, they’re allowed to take a break and a lot of times they opt to come here,” said Ofc. Mazzante.

“I buy snacks and food for them. I do keep some hygiene products because unfortunately some of our students, they don’t have that,” she explained as she pointed in the direction of her neatly organized office drawers. “I try to make room. They write on there [the white board]. We do photos at the end of the year. They love the photos.”
