One day, Hermit John arrived in Amboy with his trusty mule, carrying sacks of quartz ore to be refined in San Francisco. Curious onlookers watched as he unloaded the bags, and when one sack tore open, they saw something remarkable—quartz rocks filled with clumps of wire-gold.

Quickly securing his treasure, Hermit John drew even more attention. A writer approached him at his campsite, eager to learn more about his discovery. Hermit John claimed he had stumbled upon an old, abandoned Mexican or Spanish mine. He described a shaft, an arrastra (used to grind ore), a few graves, old mining tools, and another shaft or well nearby. He believed the mine was located northeast of Dale Dry Lake and southwest of Cadiz Dry Lake.

After that, Hermit John vanished, and no one ever found the location of his rich mine. Whether he gave its true location or took the secret to his grave remains a mystery. To this day, treasure hunters still search for Hermit John’s lost mine.
