What are consonant clusters phonics in English?
Consonant clusterphonics is the term given to two or more consonants positioned side by side in a word. You might also hear them called consonant blends. In a consonant cluster, you would pronounce each consonant, rather than one being silent, or the two coming together to produce one sound. That would be a consonant digraph, for example ‘sh’ or ‘th’.

Consonant clusters are found most often at the beginning or end of a word. At the beginning, they’re never longer than three consonants long, such as the ‘spl’ in splash, or ‘spr’ in sprain. In fact, three letter consonant clusters always begin with the letter ‘s’.

At the end of the word, they can be up to four consonants long. A good example is the ‘lfths’ in twelfths. Although there are five letters there, there are only four consonant sounds, as ‘th’ is a digraph.
