Ep 3: Can a Horse Eat Hay Through a GreenGuard Grazing Muzzle?

We made a social media post recently showing a little Shetland pony frolicking through a few inches of snow while wearing a GreenGuard Grazing Muzzle. One of the most frequently asked questions we get is whether horses can eat hay while wearing a GreenGuard.

The short answer is "yes, it is possible." The question of why a pony would wear a grazing muzzle when the pasture is covered in snow and there's no visible grass is answered in part by the availability of hay. Ponies who tend to overgraze will eat as much as they can of whatever they can. Whether that's grass or hay makes no difference to them.

Some folks use grazing muzzles so that slower eaters who may be hard keepers can get the hay they need while greedier ponies are slowed. In this video, you can see Finnick the draft cross absolutely going to town on some hay while wearing his muzzle.

To be sure, as with using a grazing muzzle for the first time on grass, there can be a learning curve - and differences in accessibility between loose hay, netted, or otherwise - but these are clever, crafty, and resourceful beasts.
