This past Saturday night, our rescue team received an urgent call that shook us to our core. This was not just another rescue story. This was about Kane, an incredibly sweet, wholly innocent soul who has survived unthinkable horrors and yet, still remains a living testament to hope, resilience, and the power of love.
Up until recently, Kane had been living through unimaginable suffering. His life was a nightmare—confined to the outdoors with a rope around his neck, no food, no clean water, and a cold, trash-strewn bed. And the horror intensified when neighbors witnessed someone ruthlessly attacking him, smashing his face with a baseball bat.
Shaken by the brutality, the neighbors called the police and animal control, who determined they "could not prove any evidence of abuse occurred" and deemed it "theft" to remove Kane from the home. So, Kane remained at the home. But thankfully, these neighbors were relentless in their pursuit of justice for Kane. They believed in the power of compassion and reached out to us for help. With an angel on earth by our side, we navigated through the challenges and secured Kane's surrender from the homeowner. Finally, Kane was free from the clutches of evil.
Through the compassion of an earthly angel who worked with the homeowner, we obtained a surrender form and whisked Kane away to the Emergency Animal Hospital. We knew we had to act fast, regardless of the cost; his face was severely swollen, and we were worried about his leg, his leg seemed injured. 
But our hearts shattered into a million pieces when we started learning just 'what' Kane was up against. X-rays provided a lot of insight into the nightmare he'd lived—revealing a severe spiral fracture in his back left femur as well as multiple metal pellets embedded in the area. 
What's more, it confirmed his six-week-old injury was the result of an intentional, senselessly violent blunt-force trauma. To quote the ER vets, “These complex fractures are usually caused by major trauma which is induced by a direct blow.” And to make matters worse, they are old. Very, very old. They've already begun to heal, and are doing so very incorrectly. 
Now, in order to fix them, this poor angel is now looking at some very big surgeries. Usually, he would require immediate surgery because of the complex nature of a spiral fracture. Because the injury is so old, there is already some new bone growth in the area; we have to see a specialist and make a plan from there. Best case scenario?– We are able to heal Kane's body and soul, while also saving his leg. Worst case scenario?– If the likelihood of a successful surgical repair is slim and it becomes a nonunion fracture, we will be discussing amputation.
We are praying that amputation will not be necessary, but will know for certain after his consultation with the specialist. What we DO know is that our sweet, brave Kane deserves so much better than the cards he's been dealt and that now, more than ever, he needs help.
Kane's journey to healing will be long, complicated, and expensive, but we refuse to let him down. We intend to get him the specialized care he so desperately needs to heal and rebuild his life, and then whatever else he needs to THRIVE. We haven't even mentioned his severe malnutrition, double ear infection, and entropion that will also require surgical repair yet... 
Please, let us stand united and show Kane that he is not alone; that we will never stop fighting for him. Every dollar, every prayer, every good vibe counts. Together, we can give him the chance to heal, both physically and emotionally, and eventually find a loving forever home where he will be cherished and protected. More updates to come, thank you all!
