In this video I'll be teaching you 5 levels of harmonic minor to go from a linear scale approach to a more 'outside' intervallic chromatic approach. This lesson is for anyone who wants to unlock the harmonic minor scale up and down the neck, a favourite tonality of Yngwie J Malmsteen and J.S.Bach among numerous other notable Jazz players. Although it functions very differently, the harmonic minor presents as simply a major scale with a flattened 3rd and 6th degree. We will be putting the harmonic minor scale through the same exercises as we did in the 'Major Scale Mastery', the '"Outside" Intervallic Approach to Scales' and 'Melodic Minor Mastery' Videos.

We'll start with a linear approach, by learning the harmonic minor scale all over the neck using three different methods. Then we'll up apply some 4-7-3-6-2-5-1 arpeggios to the melodic minor, finishing with some cheeky chromatic substitutions. Hopefully going through these 5 levels will help you to avoid the frustration of getting a scale down but still feeling musically limited by the linear, pattern-based, approach to scales.
