antares (α scorpii, alpha scorpii) is a red supergiant star and the brightest star in the constellation of scorpius. Its traditional name antares derives from the ancient greek Ἀντάρης, meaning "rival to-ares" ("opponent to-mars"), due to the similarity of its reddish hue to the appearance of the planet mars. ares is the ancient greek god of war. he embodies the physical valor necessary for success in war but can also personify sheer brutality and bloodlust (wikipedia).
