Isabel 20: A Town of Edenton Film

Isabel 20, an award-winning documentary, tells the story of Edenton, N.C. as it endured Hurricane Isabel, a devastating Cape Verde hurricane that was, at one time, a Category 5 in the tropics. Upon landfalling as as Category 2 near Ocracoke, N.C., it ravaged eastern North Carolina and southeast Virginia, carving a path of destruction and tragedy upon fishing towns and coastal cities alike.

20 years later, the film was constructed by the Town of Edenton's Public Information Office as an oral history and memorial to the legacy of the storm itself and to Chowan County's perseverance. Interviews were conducted with local leaders at the time, residents, and the National Weather Service to gauge the storm's effects on this small but proud community. Isabel 20 runs 71 minutes in length and is free for the public to view and share.

The film is broken into three stanzas: "Formation," "Invasion," and "Restoration," each representing Hurricane Isabel's genesis, impact, and aftermath.

The film won second place in a statewide Excellence in Communications competition at the annual North Carolina City & County Communicators conference in Concord, N.C. in April 2024.

This film was not made for financial benefit for monetary gain. It is a free and educational documentary for all.
