Central and Northern New York Red Cross provides relief after Hurricane Helene destruction

Lisa Smith, the Executive Director of the Central and Northern New York Chapter of the American Red Cross spoke with CNY Central from the Florida Red Cross command center.

The chapter serves the communities of Onondaga, Oswego, Madison, Oneida, Herkimer, Jefferson, Lewis, and St. Lawrence counties. There are volunteers from the region all throughout the impacted areas.

Smith says she arrived before Helene made landfall in Florida a week ago, and expects to be there for another few weeks. "It's been a really devastating storm, especially because of the width and breadth of the path that Helene had taken," said Smith, adding "These people have been hit so many times in 18 months. Idalia came through and then Debbie and now Helene."
