(16 Sep 2013) Striking school guards marched against job cuts outside a ministry in central Athens on Monday morning, as labour unions geared up for a series of public sector strikes.
The guards have been in limbo since they were suspended to save money two months ago, and they say they don't believe the government's promises to find them alternative employment.
"The matter is very simple, no one wants us (for work), they are duping us; they are telling us that we will be sent to the municipalities, then they tell us that we are not, and nothing positive comes out of it," said Evaggelos Toubas, the president of the school guards' union.
At least two strikers were later taken to hospital suffering from breathing problems after police used small amounts of pepper spray in an attempt to move protesters away from the Administrative Reform Ministry, local media reported.
Greece's government has pledged to axe thousands of public sector jobs in an effort to meet the conditions of its international bailout.
"The whole plan is for the buying power of the Greeks to be diminished, and for our salaries to drop to 400 euros," school guard Georgios Avramidis said.
The country has been depending on rescue loans from the International Monetary Fund and other European countries that use the euro since May 2010.
School teachers and guards were on strike Monday, while civil servants are to hold a 48-hour strike from Wednesday.
