When it comes to custom motorcycles, few builders manage to balance creativity, craftsmanship, and functionality as well as Ziga Petek of Gas & Retro. Over the years, his work has been celebrated across the motorcycle world, admired for its unique style and attention to detail. His latest project, known as The Shepherd, is yet another testament to his skills, transforming a 2019 Triumph Scrambler 1200 XE into a machine that perfectly blends scrambler toughness with street tracker flair.
At its core, this motorcycle remains the beloved Scrambler 1200 XE, a bike already renowned for its capable suspension and reliable Brembo brakes. Rather than tampering with those solid foundations, Ziga decided to keep them intact and instead direct his efforts toward refining other elements of the machine. The result is a motorcycle that feels both familiar and radically different at the same time.
The most noticeable change starts at the wheels. The Shepherd ditches the factory setup in favor of lightweight aluminum wheels from Excel, measuring 19 inches at the front and 18 inches at the back. Wrapped in flat track rubber, these wheels not only sharpen its stance but also improve traction for the kind of rugged riding the Scrambler is known for. The braking system is still powered by Brembo, but the front unit is now controlled by a high-end Magura HC3 master cylinder for even more precision.
Up at the cockpit, riders will find a ProTaper handlebar outfitted with hydraulic clutch conversion, Biltwell grips, bar-end turn signals, and underslung mirrors. Despite all these upgrades, the bike retains its stock instrumentation, making sure essential functionality is preserved. A clear windshield sits neatly above the headlight, paired with a custom high-mounted front fender and hand-shaped fork guards—small touches that dramatically alter the bike’s rugged yet modern appearance.
Moving toward the rear, Gas & Retro really shows off its creativity. The stock subframe has been replaced with a bespoke unit designed in-house, topped with a striking saddle that defines the bike’s character. Upholstered with genuine sheepskin on top and braided leather on the sides, this seat not only provides comfort but also gives the bike its name: The Shepherd. It’s an unusual combination that blends luxury with rugged practicality, and it’s unlike anything you’ll find on another Scrambler.
The fuel tank, sourced from a Bonneville Bobber, has been repurposed and fitted with a new filler cap, giving the bike a custom identity while still nodding to Triumph heritage. At the rear, a handmade fender and dual luggage racks add both utility and style. Multi-function LEDs double as taillights and indicators, while the license plate now sits low on an axle-mounted bracket for a sleek and aggressive finish.
For protection and adventure-ready flair, sturdy crash bars have been installed beneath the radiator, doubling as mounts for yellow PIAA spotlights that enhance visibility and add a rugged rally vibe. To complete the transformation, the Shepherd boasts a custom exhaust system and a tasteful new color scheme that ties all the elements together into a cohesive, head-turning package.
What makes the Shepherd so special isn’t just the parts list—it’s the philosophy behind it. Ziga Petek didn’t build this bike to showcase excess or unnecessary complication. Instead, he aimed to highlight the Scrambler 1200 XE’s natural strengths while enhancing its style and individuality. The result is a motorcycle that stays true to its scrambler roots while embracing an entirely new personality.
