Описание к видео Will U.S.-China relations start to thaw with economic cooperation? And...

Will U.S.-China relations start to thaw with economic cooperation? And, what does that mean for S. Korea?

미중 갈등 완화 기대 속 아세안 협력 중요성

The two biggest economies in the world the U.S. and China have not enjoyed friendly trade relations in the past few years.
However, recently there have been efforts by the two to start thawing relations.
In fact, last week U.S. Commerce Secretary Gina Raimondo visited China and met two high-ranking officials there.
This follows a couple of other visits by U.S. President Joe Biden's cabinet members to China recently.
Now, does the one from the Commerce Secretary, who has the key authority over U.S. trade policies mean the beginning of cooperation between the two global superpowers?
Also, what does the two countries' cooperation mean for South Korea as well as the members of ASEAN countries who closely border China as the ASEAN summit kicks off this week?
I'm joined by two experts today.
First, let's welcome Professor YANG Jun-sok from the Department of Economics, Catholic University of Korea. Good evening.

We also have Professor Hwagyun KIM of Banking and Finance at Texas A&M University, Mays Business School connecting with us from Texas thank you for joining us at such early hours.

1. (YANG) Raimondo's visit comes after years of trade tensions between the two countries. First, why is this significant? Is it more than just a show?

2. (KIM) Now the countries also held an export control group meeting on August 29th. What do you think will come from this?

3. (YANG) Now kind of stepping back from the meeting at least here in South Korea, concerns are growing that China's economy is weakening. Is this true and has this affected China's stance on economic relations with the U.S.?

4. (KIM) Where does the U.S. stand when it comes to the economy? Does it need China's cooperation at the moment? Or, is Biden’s reelection in the picture?

5. (KIM) So, now bringing the discussion back to South Korea. If economic cooperation ramps up between the U.S. and China, will it resolve issues with U.S. CHIPS Act and South Korean chipmakers?

6. (YANG) Adding onto that, how can the South Korean government strategically take advantage of the improved trade relations between the two global superpowers?

7. (YANG) So on September 6th, President Yoon will be attending a summit with leaders of the ASEAN countries. With uncertainties in the supply chain and the current trade atmosphere, what could be some key takeaways that President Yoon may try to achieve?

8. (KIM) Also following the ASEAN Summit President Yoon heads to G20 and will have a bilateral sideline meeting Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi. What can we expect from the talks in which areas do you think the two can cooperate?

9. (YANG) To wrap up today's discussion, there was suggestion of danger for the South Korean economy in September. However, the government is claiming that things will take a turn upwards towards the end of the year. What is your outlook? Are things looking bright or grim?

Unfortunately, that's all the time we have for today's edition.
Professors Yang and Kim, thank you so much for joining us this evening.
Hope to see you again soon.
