Catechism of Pope St. Pius X, 1908 A.D.
Question 16. Is Baptism necessary to salvation?
A: “Baptism is absolutely necessary to salvation, for our Lord has expressly said: "Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Ghost, he cannot enter into the Kingdom of God.”
Question 17. Can the absence of Baptism be supplied in any other way?
A: “The absence of Baptism can be supplied by martyrdom, which is called Baptism of Blood, or by an act of perfect love of God, or of contrition, along with the desire, at least implicit, of Baptism, and this is called Baptism of Desire.”

Saint Robert Bellarmine 1598 A.D.
T. The necessity of Baptism is so great that if anyone were to die without reception of Baptism, or at least the desire for it, he could by no means enter heaven. …

This Catechism was written at the express command of Pope Clement VIII, and was subsequently approved by him. Specifically approved by Pope Benedict XIV, and Pius XI in his declaration making the saint a doctor of the Church, declared of the Catechism:
“Nor may we pass-over in silence his sacred sermons and also his catechetical works, especially that Catechism, which the use of the ages as well as the judgment of a great many Bishops and Doctors of the Church has approved. Indeed, in that same catechism, composed at the command of Clement the VIII, the illustrious holy theologian expounded for the use of the Christian people and especially of children, the Catholic truth in a plain style, so brilliantly, exactly and orderly that for nearly three centuries in many regions of Europe and the world, it most fruitfully provided the fodder of Christian doctrine to the faithful”

Catechism of the Council of Trent
Baptism of Desire
"On adults, however, the Church has not been accustomed to confer the Sacrament of Baptism at once, but has ordained that it be deferred for a certain time. The delay is not attended with the same danger as in the case of infants, which we have already mentioned; should any unforeseen accident make it impossible for adults to be washed in the salutary waters, their intention and determination to receive Baptism and their repentance for past sins, will avail them to grace and righteousness.” (The Sacrament of Baptism, 1566 A.D.)

Council of Trent
Baptism of Desire
"In these words a description of the justification of a sinner is given as being a translation from that state in which man is born a child of the first Adam to the state of grace and of the adoption of the Sons of God through the second Adam, Jesus Christ, our Savior and this translation after the promulgation of the Gospel cannot be effected except through the laver of regeneration or a desire for it, as it is written: "Unless a man be born again of water and the Holy Spirit, he cannot enter in the kingdom of God" (John 3:5)." (Session 6, Chapter 4)

Saint Augustine
Retractions, Book 2. Ch. 44. c. 427 A.D.
Re: Seven Books on Baptism.
‘In the fourth book, when I said: “Suffering can take the place of baptism,” I cited the example of the thief, which is not quite appropriate, for it is uncertain weather he had been baptized.’

Saint Cyprian of Carthage. Bishop and Martyr. Epistle 73/74, Par. 21-23. c. 250 A.D.
§21. Can the power of baptism be greater or of more avail than confession, than suffering, when one confesses Christ before men and is baptized in his own blood? ... And therefore it behooves those to be baptized who come from heresy to the Church, that so they who are prepared, in the lawful, and true, and only baptism of the holy Church, by divine regeneration, for the kingdom of God, may be born of both sacraments, because it is written, “Except a man be born of water and of the Spirit, he cannot enter into the kingdom of God” (Jn 3:5).
§22. On which place some, as if by human reasoning they were able to make void the truth of the Gospel declaration, object to us the case of catechumens; asking if any one of these, before he is baptized in the Church, should be apprehended and slain on confession of the name [of Christ], whether he would lose the hope of salvation and the reward of confession, because he had not previously been born again of water? ... But the same Lord declares in the Gospel, that those who are baptized in their own blood, and sanctified by suffering, are perfected, and obtain the grace of the divine promise, when He speaks to the thief believing and confessing in His very passion, and promises that he should be with Himself in paradise. ...
